CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Finally,” Elvis Purrsley grumbled as I shut the door behind me, closing us into the bedroom I’d chosen to use. “I’ve been waiting forever to talk to you. Why couldn’t you get rid of those pesky humans sooner?”

“It’s a little hard to get rid of the people who are actively watching over you,” I advised him, “and watch your mouth, smarty. I’m one of those pesky humans.”

“That’s all right, mama. You’re the best one.”

“Because I’m the only one other than Zora who knows your secret?” I asked as I settled him on the blue comforter covering the queen-size bed.

I’d chosen to use the Moody Blue room. I’d always loved the room best out of all the guest rooms. There was something about the mix of dark blues with the black, modern furniture that had a calming effect. The Elvis memorabilia was a little less heavy in the room as well, with just a few paintings of Elvis Presley in his dark blue suit adorning each wall, and of course, a framed copy of the Moody Blue album, which contained several of my favorite songs by the late legend. Not that the room was any less spectacular than the others. The dark blue comforter was rimmed in rhinestones and the glass Tiffany lamps on each nightstand featured a stained glass peacock design similar to the design found in Elvis Presley’s home. The ensuite bathroom was also heavy on the blue, but thankfully, not so heavy on the King. Having Elvis Presley watch me while I used the toilet was where I drew the line and, thankfully, so did Della.

“Because Mama told me you were. My first mama. Della.” Elvis Purrsley’s little shoulders seemed to droop. “Why have people been talking about other Elvis Purrsleys? Della said I was special.”

My heart sank as I joined Elvis Purrsley on the bed, realizing he’d never known about the other Elvis Purrsleys. I could only imagine what a shock it had been to learn he wasn’t the only cat Della had loved, or even the only one with his name. “Oh, sweetie, you are special. You heard what everyone said. Della spent more time with you than any of her other cats.”

“Only because I could talk back to her in the way she could understand,” he said as I picked him up and placed him on my lap. His yellow eyes, bright with unshed tears, tugged at my heartstrings when he looked up at me. “Did she only love me because I could talk?”

“Of course not, sweetie. Della loved you from the moment she laid eyes on you. Why do you think she brought you here to live with her? You couldn’t talk then, could you?”

He shook his head.

“Could you understand the things she said to you before you were able to speak in words we understand?”

He nodded, much to my relief.

“And did Della not tell you that you were the best cat in the whole world, and her favorite?” I asked, knowing she had because that was the way Della had spoken to all her cats.
